Short, But Not So Sweet

There’s nothing more awkward in a living room than a rug that’s tragically too small. Like a cotton sweater that’s accidentally been put into the dryer, a rug that’s the wrong size is ill-fitting and unforgiving.

Why should I avoid this?

Small rugs can make a room look busy and cramped. How so? Suddenly, your average sized loveseat looks massive and your coffee table resembles something closer to a kitchen table. The drastically small size of the rug is mirrored in other objects in the room, closing in the space.

How do I avoid this?

A general rule of thumb when purchasing an area rug is to make sure the rug is 8-12 inches from the walls. This can help extend the space of a room. Additionally, all furniture should have at least the front legs on the rug. This will help the rug stay in place as well.

The size of the rug is vital to the layout of a room, and getting too small of a rug can radically shrink your floor plan. Make sure to find a rug that fits your room, or risk suffocating your space.

Happy rug hunting!
