How to Clean a Shag Rug

The unique texture of shag rugs provides the perfect contrast to all types of furniture, including firm, velvet loveseats and sleek, leather couches. But, what happens when it’s time to clean it? If you don’t know what to do, you might not think it’s so perfect anymore. Follow our cleaning guide to keep your shag rug in great condition.

Light dirt and dust

While heavy enough to instantly warm your floors, shag rugs shouldn’t be vacuumed. The harsh suction may deplete some of the shag of your rug by tearing the rug’s fibers. Instead, try bringing your rug outside and shaking it off. Let it hang outside so that the sun’s UV rays can kill bacteria and dust mites.

Spills and stains

If you happen to spill wine on your rug, don’t panic! Dab the area with a paper towel to soak up as much of the spill as you can. Next, find an appropriate cleaner to spray onto your rug. Do this by reading your rug’s care instructions and by identifying the kind of spill it is (oil based, protein based, etc).

Serious messes and heavy stains

When nothing else can be done to salvage your rug, take it to professional rug cleaners who will hopefully work their rug magic. Professional cleaners can also clean your rug more thoroughly, so if you haven’t cleaned your rug in a while, you might just want to take it in.

Shag rugs do require upkeep and cleaning, so if this doesn’t fit your current lifestyle, consider buying a different style of rug. However, when properly maintained and taken care of, shag rugs can bring serious style into your home.

Happy rug hunting!
