Kid-Friendly Decorating Tips
Just because you have little ones doesn’t mean that you can’t decorate a toy room to your liking! Play with different colors, prints, and wall decorations to enhance the creativity of a space. Although toys might litter the floor every once in awhile, a fun rug will help to minimize the apparent mess.
Rugs are also a great way to prevent stains on carpets and scratches on hardwood flooring. With spills, mud and other messes, rugs are easy to replace and to clean up.
Take a look at these three kid-friendly spaces, and find out why each one works!
#1 Playroom
This cute playroom is brought to life by the vibrant orange and pink color scheme. The rug’s butterflies are a brighter color than the muted pink and cream color background, so playing off these bright colors makes the space more lively. Notice that the pillows and wall flags don’t exactly match the butterfly colors, and that’s okay. (Colors don’t have to be an exact match!)
The flags draped over the wall and window are a nice addition to the room. Consider hanging flags in your playroom as some fun, inexpensive decor. Drape them from wall to wall or hang them up on just one wall, giving the line some slack.
#2 Nursery
The soft, green hue of the rug creates a calming effect in the nursery. The natural light also helps to illuminate the space. When decorating a nursery, you don’t always have to go with your traditional baby blue and light pink colors. Try picking softer shades of green and purple. Even a light gray wall color could be contrasted with a subtle yellow area rug.
If you’re choosing an area rug for a nursery, try to pick a print and color that your infant won’t outgrow. The light green rug in this picture is so versatile it could easily be moved to a playroom, or could remain in the room for a few years after the crib is gone.
#3 Basement
If you have concrete floors in your basement, a rug can help turn that space into a kid’s playroom. Choose an amusing rug print to inspire creativity and originality. In this set up, a striped rug is accented by three brightly colored ottoman pillows that don’t exactly match the blues and teals used in the rug. Artwork is pinned to the wall at eye level, making it easy for kids to admire and revisit their work.
The colors in the space are kid-friendly, and this basement floor is made cozy with the addition of a rug. If you’re worried that your basement might be too dull and drab for kids, you don’t have to resort to buying new furniture or completely redecorating. Adding a few inexpensive, but key, pieces can help bring a space together.
Decorate your kids’ rooms just as you would any other room. Pay attention to color palettes, play with pillows, and keep in mind the ultimate purpose of the room. Kids rooms are meant to entertain and be a positive space for kids to express themselves! And remember...HAVE FUN!
